Having also worked with a wide range of teams over the years - some successful & enjoyable, some less so :) I agree with you that there is a combination of direction (which can be facilitated, trained, etc...) and alchemy. I think the alchemy (at least partially) comes in through the group dynamic - the personalities of those involved, their own personal styles and motivations and how that translates into the group dynamic. If there are people in the group that don't really want to be in it for some reason, you can 'bring them along' but a toll may be taken on the process and result and the 'magic' you describes may not have all of the necessary ingredients to happen.Bonnie Koenighttp://www.goinginternational.comnoreply@blogger.com
